If you live in India, it isn’t a rare sight to spot a street vendor selling “Ray Bon” sunglasses at 99/- Sure, you shall look all smug in your Goa vacation pictures, but this has more bad to do than good.

Oftentimes you can find these fake glasses with the correct spelling of the company too. You may be thrilled to find it a cheaper alternative but, this could do greater harm to your eyes than when you aren’t wearing any of these fake sunglasses.

The primary function of sunglasses is to protect your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun that contain UV Radiation(both UVA and UVB). This radiation is said to cause various eye problems, including cataracts, macular degeneration, and photokeratitis.

When exposed to direct sunlight, we naturally close our eyelids to control the amount of incoming light. However, fake sunglasses without UVA/UVB protection block visible sunlight but make our  pupils enlarge, allowing more UVA/UVB rays.

The World Health Organization’s assessment in 2019 projected that more than three million individuals annually lose their eyesight due to cataracts, primarily triggered sun exposure, direct exposure to the sun can also lead to other severe eye conditions, including macular degeneration, pterygium, and photokeratitis.

Counterfeit sunglasses also distort your perception of size, challenging you to determine accurate distance of objects. This becomes a significant safety concern when you are walking on the road or driving a vehicle.

Reports suggest that on average, manufacturers lose between 15 and 20 percent of their market revenues annually due to fake products, according to Arushi Thakur, a Technavio analyst.

Due to the extremely fragmented eyewear industry and the prevalence of small producers, it is more likely to come across fake sunglasses. Low- and middle-income consumers are expected to pick imitation sunglasses over those created by genuine brands due to the high cost of such products. But, we must not forget the perils caused by counterfeit eye-wear.
